LONG POND - Dr. Joseph "Doc" Mattioli was named as a nominee for the Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR on Wednesday night.

Pocono Raceway, the host of two NASCAR race weekends each summer, was founded by Doc and his wife, Dr. Rose Mattioli. The Mattiolis have owned and operated the 2.5-mile track for more than 50 years.

Doc, who died in 2012 at 86, was originally a dentist living in the Philadelphia area with Dr. Rose, a podiatrist. The couple moved to the Poconos in the 1960s after a local investor convinced Doc to partner in the investor's plan to build a racetrack where a spinach farm once stood.

That property became home to a mammoth superspeedway that still stands as one of the longest on the NASCAR circuit and has hosted Monster Energy Cup Series racing since 1974.
